SPARKLES THE FIRE SAFETY DOG

Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog has recently become the subject of a new children's fire safety book and audio book, Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog. The picture book, written by Author Firefighter Dayna Hilton, and published by Firehouse Dog Publishing, is geared toward children ages 4-8 and their caregivers. These books are not only fun, but educational, and are based on Fire Protection Publication’s comprehensive Fire Safety for Young Children, an Early Childhood Education Curriculum, making it the most up-to-date children’s fire safety book on the market.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2007 there were more than 1.5 million fires reported in the United States. These fires caused 3,430 civilian deaths, 17,675 civilian injuries, and $14.6 billion in property damage. In that same year, there was a civilian fire related death every 30 seconds.Sparkles and Firefighter Dayna hope to help change these unfortunate statistics, one book and fire safety presentation at a time.

As children learn of the adventures of Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog in the book, they also learn valuable fire safety tips helping them and their families to keep fire safe. These tips include recognizing the firefighter as a helper and a friend, knowing the sound and purpose of a smoke alarm, learning how to crawl low under smoke, and understanding the importance of practicing a home fire drill
using an escape map.

Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog was rescued from a home with 62 other dogs and has come a long way since her days before adoption. Sparkles and Hilton have participated in a Congressional briefing in Washington, DC, currently appear on PBS KIDS Sprout On Demand and the
PBS KIDS Sprout Website sharing fire safety tips and they have appeared on FOX and Friends. Sparkles travels with Hilton, taking their fire safety messages to children all across the United States. Together, the duo has reached millions of children and their caregivers.

Hilton and Sparkles were recently honored by having their book mentioned in a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Community Preparedness Sub-Committee by Chairman Senator Mark Pryor in Washington, DC (

Book tours have been held with major appearances in Indianapolis, Chicago, Boston, and Nashville. The two have participated in events held in cooperation with the Chicago Fire Department, the Nashville Fire Department and the Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office, among others. Events have also been sponsored by First Alert, the International Fire Service Training Association and the Home Safety Council. With Sparkles' help, two children from two families knew what to do when they were involved in a fire situation after Hilton and Sparkles read the book and followed it by a fire safety presentation at a school in a neighboring state. You may read more about it here:

They are truly thankful that the children and their families are safe and that they were able to help in some small way.

Sparkles is also web-savvy Dalmatian, helping promote fire safety and her book on her website (

The book is available from
Firehouse Dog Publishing and Amazon.com for $4.99 (plus s and h) and the audio book available from Firehouse Dog Publishing for $5.99. If purchased on the Firehouse Dog Publishing website, a portion of the proceeds benefits fire safety education efforts.

Wow - great posting - I look forward to seeing and hearing more about this book and this duo. Although my kids are teenagers, they still remember their teaching from grade school about fire safety and other things. Thanks for sharing this health and safety week themed week with us, Shari. See you all in the postings - E :)

Mayra - you should check out Dayna's blog and all - I'm impressed in such a short time she has sold 8000 copies. I want her readership for my books. lol. I wouldn't mind having a fraction of the following but I'm sure it will come when the schools realize what I have. I think I saw on another site, there is another dalmation - Spanny (not sure) - that now accompanies Sparkles. Maybe Dayna will stop by and clarify for us - lol -

Again, fun idea of themed weeks, Shari. See you in the postings - E :)

Thanks so much Shari for sharing information about our book on your blog. Sparkles and I were very excited to see the posting this morning and have shared it will all of our two-legged and four-legged friends : )

Mayra and Elysabeth, thank you so much for your nice comments. In answer to your question, Elysabeth, Spanner is my other Dalmatian. I have two other dals in training to be fire safety dogs; Chief and a dog yet to be named (I plan on having a contest to let children help name her). : )

I wish all of you could meet Sparkles. She loves nothing more than helping me teach fire safety. Her tail wags a mile a minute! I had always wanted to write a children's book, and one day when I was putting on her red vest, it hit me right then and there that that was my book~ Sparkles and her love for helping teach fire safety. The rest, as they say, is history : )

Have a great day and stay safe,

Dayna

Dayna, that is so cool. Now are all the dogs yours or you just train them? Do they stay at the fire station? Do other firefighters adopt the dogs as you have Sparkles? If you are interested in doing a small book festival in the fall I know one that appreciates having animals on board. Let me know and I'll hook you up with the contact person. It's a very inexpensive small book festival for children's authors and I think yours would be perfect to attract some attention. It is in a small town in South Carolina, and I hope to be there again this year, along with a couple of other authors from the same publishing house who are in the area.

It's fun to find out about the animals in books too. Looking forward to more from you (be sure to stop by next week when I'll be featured on Shari's blog) - see you all in the postings - E :)

This book, Sparkles and Dayna have a great thing here. The message is perfect and the fact that children are all ready putting this into practice because of the school visits is fantastic.
